A political firestorm erupted in South Carolina after Gilda Cobb-Hunter, a longtime Democrat in the state legislature, referred to Moms for Liberty as a “terrorist organization” during remarks on the floor of the South Carolina House.

The comment immediately drew backlash from conservative activists and parental rights advocates across the country, who say the rhetoric is reckless and dangerous.

Leaders with Moms for Liberty pointed out that the remarks came on the six-month anniversary of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a moment they say makes the accusation particularly disturbing.

In a statement posted on social media, the organization condemned the comment and warned about the consequences of inflammatory political language.

“Yesterday, on the six-month anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination, a South Carolina State Representative stood on the House floor and proclaimed, ‘Moms for Liberty is a terrorist organization,’” the group wrote.

“These are the kinds of dangerous words and labels that get people killed.”

Moms for Liberty co-founder Tina Descovich responded publicly, accusing the lawmaker of endangering thousands of parents across the country who volunteer with the organization.

“There are actual terrorists throwing bombs in the streets of New York right now,” Descovich wrote. “This is not only utterly ridiculous, it is dangerous. This woman is putting a target on Moms for Liberty members’ backs.”

Descovich went further, calling on Cobb-Hunter’s colleagues in the legislature to formally reprimand her.

“This Representative should be censured by her colleagues for this,” she said.
